It was hard leaving the Exumas Headquarters Emerald Rock anchorage at 10:00, but knowing we were going to Hawksbill Cay was exciting. Hawksbill Cay, still part of the Exumas Park chain, was noted for its fine beaches.
We had a great sail for the 10 miles with almost perfect winds. Arriving at Hawksbill Cay was a little challenging. The tide was receding and we could see the rocks on the bottom. We inched our way towards the shore line where two open mooring balls were waiting for us. That’s the positive thing in the Chesapeake; you have no idea what you are hitting on the bottom. At times, ignorance can be bliss! In the Bahamas we were much more careful because we could clearly see what we would be hitting. Pekabu had left us the day before and had headed straight to Nassau so Pete could get connectivity and work.
We went by dinghy in to shore and walked along the one mile or so of beautiful white sandy beach looking at the many minnows along the way. There were some rather large vessels in that anchorage and when the mariners swam to shore we felt as if they were imposing on our mile long beach. The evening had ended perfectly with a shooting star!
