November 2, 2010 Bell Haven NC to Oriental NC

We left Belhaven’s anchorage at 8 am as we were expecting to arrive at River Dune Marina in Broad Creek by early afternoon.  Arriving after dark at our anchorage was the couple we had met in Norfolk.  They had a smaller boat than the rest of us so I gave them a lot of credit in the much longer days they had put in.  It was great to wave to them as we were all pulling up our anchors.  We continued down the Palmico River.  There must have been 50 sailboats, with their jibs up, all clearly seen on this very long river.  What a spectacular sight it was!   As we were preparing to go into the next river, Bay River, we saw a school of dolphins.  It was our first sighting of dolphins on this trip and hopefully it would not be our last. We enjoyed a tomato pie for lunch given to us by our Aunt Julie; it was a great warm meal on a chilly day.  After the Bay River we made a turn into the Neuse River.   With the two rivers joining, it was quite a rough ride crossing the Neuse and we were surprised by the four foot waves.  We had only a few miles to go before we arrived at River Dune which is a planned community with homes, pool, and plenty of walking paths. It was a wonderful resort setting for our being on the water for a week; the heads (bathrooms) will be hard to beat along the inter coastal waterway (hereafter listed as ICW).  One of our friends from the lumber industry was here with his boat, Absolutely,  and they took us out to  M & M Café in Oriental for a fabulous dinner with a third couple who had driven up to see us from Beaufort.  It was a reunion that no one could have predicted two years ago!

Andiamo would stay there until the following Tuesday. We were renting a car and driving home for the weekend to attend a Naval Academy wedding and to celebrate Thanksgiving with Julia, Nick, Paul, and Jessi.
