November 1, 2010 Alligator River to Bell Haven NC

Parade of boats going under the many fixed bridges

Today we pulled our anchor at 8:30am since we were planning on traveling about 35 miles.  We went down the Alligator River-Pungo River Canal with two fixed bridges to travel under.  The second one was listed in the guide books as only 64 feet (an engineering error) rather than the required 65 feet.   Andiamo seemed to have the tallest mast in the group of sailboats parading down the canal – in a single file.  There was a slightly larger masted boat two boats behind us and we could hear them saying on the radio that Andiamo was the test boat to see how much clearance the bridge actually had.  We needed a minimum of 63.5 feet from the water.  The clearance under the bridge at any particular time is determined by the tides.   So after much chatter on the radio, we made it safely under the bridge along with everyone else that was in our parade of boats at the time!   After going down this very long canal we were then in the Pungo River where we anchored in the Pantego Creek.  It is a creek next to the southern town of Belhaven.  John and I decided to enjoy a glass of wine on Andiamo rather than going into town on Brunelle's dinghy.  Dan and Martha came back from town and enjoyed a glass of wine with us.
