November 9, 2010 Oriental NC to Georgetown SC -Part 1

We left River Dune at 10 am after everyone filled up with water and fuel.  We sailed along the Neuse River and then into a canal which was very interesting and kept us on alert.  For some reason, there were a lot of “deadheads”.  Deadheads are fallen trees, branches, and debris just floating by but they are very hard to spot in the water.  We did manage to sail Andiamo over one of them and it made some noise as it went under our keel.   We arrived at Beaufort, NC around 3pm and the decision was made that the conditions were good enough for us to head out into the ocean for our first overnight and our first ocean experience.  Since John and I weren’t quite sure what to expect, we kept close tabs on the three other boats in our group.  We soon realized, since it was now getting dark faster, that our running lights were not working.   Our steaming lights (lights halfway up the mast) were on so we did have some light coming from our boat for identification purposes.   We enjoyed the Thanksgiving leftovers for dinner and then Betty went to bed to sleep and John kept watch for the first watch.  The sunset was just breathtaking and the crescent moon lit our way for a few hours.  The ocean had small one foot rollers with comfortable winds in which we were able to keep up our jib (forward sail) and we just sailed along till daybreak.
