January 23- 26, 2011 Key West

Part of our group on the dock of Conch Marina in Key West

Conch Marina had been our home for the week in Key West.  Walking into and around town and back to our boat had its advantages.  Our friends, Lori and Richard Young, pulled their boat into Key West and were gracious enough to bring our CCYC group for cocktails onto the top deck of their home.  They have lived aboard Forever Young for the past 10 years and traveled the east coast & the Bahamas for the past three years.  We enjoyed listening and looking at their previous Bahamas’ tales and pictures.  We were anxious to experience the adventures ourselves.

We had lunch with our SRL neighbors, Norma and Dick Klein.  They took us to a unique restaurant, Schooner Wharf, to enjoy the Key West flavor of listening to a one man entertainer playing his guitar.  Key West was a very dog friendly town with the guitarist's dog hanging out with him on stage.

Dinner at Antonia’s with Rich and Lori allowed us to get caught up with news regarding mutual friends and co-workers.  Antonia Restaurant made fresh pasta daily and we all had excellent meals including a shared Key Lime pie.

Sue and Walt Dennison picked us up in their motor home and took us to a local fish restaurant on Stock Island just north of Key West.  It was called Hog Fish Restaurant.  The nine of us (minus Pete who had gone to Philadelphia for a fast business trip) sat outside on a picnic table under an umbrella. The restaurant received their freshly caught fish from the fishing boats next to the restaurant. We enjoyed the best fried green tomatoes, hog fish and chips platter.  This was truly another unique experience as we took a walk between the rain drops.  We went down to the pier and were able to see, up close and personal, the very unique live aboard homes on the water.  The homes had decorated pilings, gardens, and room air conditioners sticking out from the structures. There were many down in Key West since they do not need to pay taxes if they (supposedly) live on the water. Also in the creek was Mel Fisher's vessel.  He looks for sunken treasures and had his goods in a museum.  He has a television show on the Learning Channel and he seemed to be very interesting but time did not allow us to investigate further.

The weather had not been Key West perfect since we arrived.  We had intermittent wind and showers and then the sun would appear and we had beautiful blue skies– all within an hour’s time.  We were not complaining.  If we had to carry a sweater or a rain jacket with us at least it was not a snow shovel!

That evening we were invited on board Forever Young and met Renee and Tom from the boat, Tomahawk.  They live on the Severn River and we enjoyed their company.  Tom did let us know that he did not think two months in the Bahamas would be nearly enough time.

We were leaving in the morning to start traveling back north up the Keys to get Marathon Key.
