April 18, 2011 Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island, FL to Hilton Head SC

We left at 9:30am to walk into town which was right across the street from the municipal marina where we were docked.  It was a picturesque southern town with nice shops and plenty of eateries.   We all enjoyed walking in and out of the shops, trying on some clothes, and just enjoying the day.  We all met at the restaurant near our marina so Pete could join us.  He had stayed aboard Pekabu to do some work.  We all then went back to the boats to rest and get prepared for our overnight up to Hilton Head.

Our plan was to leave at 5pm to head out St. Mary’s inlet which was between the border of Florida and Georgia and to arrive in Hilton Head by 9am.  We left our marina and headed out.  There was a fort, along with a few dolphins, on the Amelia Island side of the inlet.  The trip speed was planned to be around 6K to 6.5K in order that we would not arrive too early at Hilton Head.  The ocean was relatively calm with a full moon and we had a perfect ride up the coast of Georgia.  We arrived at the Hilton Head inlet as the sun was coming up which was a good thing.  We found quite a bit of debris in the channel and also in the marina harbor from the high tide of the full moon.  We always preferred to arrive in daylight.
