March 26, 2011 Rock Sound to Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera Island

Leaving Rock Sound at 8:30am we arrived at Governor’s Harbour by lunch time which gave us time to explore the island.  After anchoring and Dan checking the anchors with the see-through bucket, we headed into town.  We checked out the nearby grocery store and the liquor store.  The grocery store was the largest and best stocked we had found outside of Nassau; they even had bananas (which was the only thing we needed and purchased)!  Before we did purchase them, we decided to do our walk first by crossing the island which was supposed to be 2/3 mile across to the Atlantic Ocean to see the famous pink sand beach.  The beach is known locally as French Leave Beach and it’s the beach used by Club Med prior to its being wiped out by a hurricane.  The beach was beautiful with pink sand mixed with the white.  There were no shells but the sand was pristine which was perfect for walking.  We came across a local (an Aussie) along the way who told us that the beach was considered the fourth best beach in the world.

We started our journey back across the island to do our shopping.  It was quite a trek but not so much due to the distance but because of the height of the hill in the middle of the island.  Additionally, the temperature that day was above 85 degrees. I thought the heat was getting to all of us because we were looking forward to the air conditioned supermarket.  We did our shopping and went back to the boat where we enjoyed a cocktail and a quiet evening reading.
