After a brief early shower, we decided to leave at 9am to head down to Big Majors Cay. What a great day and there had definitely been a difference in the winds that we experienced that day. The water and weather were exactly what you would expect a Bahamian vacation to be – winds with knots between 10-15 mph and low seas. As soon as we anchored at Big Majors we saw the friendly wild pigs that come out to greet the boats in hopes of getting a piece of bread thrown to them. Although we were excited to see them (since we had heard so much about them) we had decided that our priorities were to visit the Staniel Cay Yacht Club to deposit some trash (at $2.50 a small bag and $5.00 a big bag) and to find our way to the airport for Julia’s flight the following day. We quickly found that the Staniel Cay Airport would not be your typical airport. It was extremely primitive. Julia would not have to take off her shoes, or be scanned, or even have a place to go to the bathroom before her flight. We found a small dinghy dock about 200 yards from the airstrip where she would have to walk with her luggage and then wait in a cabana for her flight. When we said we were remote…we were remote!!!
Following our adventure to find the airport, we checked out Thunderbolt Grotto. This was the famous grotto scene in the James Bond movie “Thunderball”. We snorkeled from our dinghy into the famous rock and into the grotto. We needed to do this at low tide since we would not fit under the rock formation to enter the grotto. The amazing different fish we saw were more colorful than we expected. We had to admit, it was neat to pull our heads up from snorkeling inside a rock formation which had a hole in the roof for sunlight (James Bond entered from the hole in the movie). The florescent colors of coral and fish were breathtaking. On our way home from the grotto, Julia and Betty finally convinced John that it was time to visit and feed the pigs. When we approached the beach three large pigs trailed by a piglet met us at our dinghy for left over bread. Those pigs were gentle and nice and not what you typically imagine when you think of wild pigs. As they treaded water, they were thrilled to eat our bread droppings. What an experience!
Following Dan to Thunderbolt CaveMore fish- a lot of variety in the cave
Swimming Pigs
The wind and sun gods were in our favor as we all enjoyed quiet seas, light winds, and a beautiful sunset. We celebrated another beautiful day in paradise by having a few mojitos and bottles of wine. We could only imagine what the next day would bring.
